Moving to Christchurch?Find a Church Family

If you already live in Christchurch, or you are still preparing to come, you are welcome to worship with us and hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

A Filipino-English church, open to all

The Avenue Village NZ is a Filipino-English Christian church in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our Sunday worship is in English and Filipino. Many of us are Filipino, and we are glad to welcome those who already live here, as well as overseas Filipino workers and families preparing to move from the Philippines or from another country.

We also welcome New Zealanders and people from other backgrounds. You do not need to be Filipino to come. If you want to hear the Bible taught and to know Jesus Christ, there is a place for you among us.

The Scriptures, discipleship, and the True Jesus Christ

We are committed to the Bible as the Word of God. Our aim is to proclaim the True Jesus Christ as He is revealed in Scripture, and to make disciples through faithful preaching and teaching. Sunday sermons are biblical and expository. We teach the Bible in its own context, book by book, so that God’s Word sets the message rather than the preferences of the moment.

A church can be warm and still miss Christ. We want to be a welcoming people, and we want something more: that sinners would hear the gospel and come to know Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, as the Scriptures present Him.

“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

(John 17:3)

Our Statement of Faith sets out what we believe and teach. If you are asking who Jesus is, read Why We Say “True Jesus Christ”.

Sunday worship

Sundays at 10:00 AM
English–Filipino Worship Service
Hall of Riccarton Primary School
1 English Street, Sockburn, Christchurch 8042

We gather to worship God through Scripture, prayer, and congregational singing. We sing hymns and Christian songs. The preaching of God’s Word is the centre of the morning. Families worship together, and after the singing children may go to Kids’ Sunday School for teaching from the Bible suited to their age.

Plan a visit for a fuller picture of a Sunday morning, including what to wear and how the service runs.

Through the week

Church life continues beyond Sunday.

Saturday Bible study and prayer meets at 6:30 PM in the same hall. We open the Scriptures, pray, and encourage one another.

We also gather for home Bible studies and smaller group discussions at various times. Please contact us for current schedules and locations.

Youth ministry is a place for young people to learn Scripture, ask honest questions, and grow in friendship within the church. Learn about Youth Ministry.

Children’s ministry includes Kids’ Sunday School during Sunday worship, so children are taught God’s Word while their families gather with the church.

Basketball fellowship is part of our sports ministry. People of different skill levels can play, meet others, and be encouraged in Christ. Learn about Basketball Fellowship.

What to expect on your first Sunday

Come as you are. Someone will be glad to greet you, and you may sit wherever you are comfortable. The service is in English and Filipino. You will hear Scripture read and preached, and you will have time afterwards for fellowship if you wish to stay.

You are welcome to attend without any obligation to give money or speak publicly. If you have questions or would like to introduce yourself, our church family will be glad to meet you. Dress is modest and casual. If you are new to church, or new to the city, you are still welcome. If you would rather leave quietly at the end, that is all right too. If something is unclear, ask. We would rather help you than leave you unsure.

If you are still overseas

If you are in the Philippines or another country and you expect to come to Christchurch, write to us before you arrive. Tell us your name, a little about yourself or your family if you wish, and when you hope to come. We would be glad to pray for you and to explain what Sunday worship is like.

As a church family, we desire to show Christ's love not only through words but also through practical care and hospitality. If you are preparing to move to Christchurch, you are welcome to contact us before arriving.

Depending on the circumstances and availability of our church members, we may be able to assist with airport pickup, local guidance, connecting with people in the community, or other practical needs.

While we cannot guarantee assistance with every request, we will gladly listen and see how we may be able to help.
